Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

What is MLD?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, gentle technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage the natural drainage of lymph fluid. Unlike massage therapy, MLD is a clinical modality based on precise, rhythmic movements that follow the direction of lymph flow, no creams or lotions are applied during the session.

MLD is used to reduce swelling, support immune function, and promote tissue healing — especially following surgery or injury. It is particularly effective for managing post-operative edema, inflammation, and soft tissue recovery. MLD sessions can be very relaxing and soothing.

Who Can Benefit from MLD?

MLD can be beneficial for individuals experiencing:

  • Post-surgical swelling (cosmetic, orthopedic, or general surgery)

  • Lymphedema

  • Inflammation or fluid retention

  • Injury recovery (sprains, strains, fractures)

  • Fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue symptoms

  • Sinus congestion or autoimmune-related swelling

  • Detoxification support (as approved by your healthcare provider)

MLD is often recommended by physicians, surgeons, and physical therapists as part of a comprehensive recovery plan.

Contraindications – When MLD Should Be Avoided

MLD is gentle and non-invasive, but it’s not appropriate in certain medical situations. You should consult your healthcare provider before receiving MLD if you have:

  • Active infections or fever

  • Congestive heart failure (unmanaged or severe)

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or active blood clots

  • Kidney failure or significant renal dysfunction

  • Cancer that has not been cleared for MLD by your oncology team

  • Uncontrolled hypertension

All clients will be screened for medical history and contraindications prior to treatment.
